“If you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted in pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days.” –Annie Dillard
The plan is to post a thought every monday about life, faith, writing, and a variety of related things.
Why pennies? Barbara Brown Taylor first got me interested in them in 2007 when she preached about the parable of the lost coin. She said, “Who takes time for a penny anymore?” I thought, “I do. Or, at least, I want to be someone who does.”
I came across Annie Dillard’s thought a few years later. It seems like much-needed wisdom for me. Maybe for a lot of us.
The world is planted in pennies, and those of us who love them for their sake–not just for what they might buy us, because they will surely never be enough for that–are rich indeed. And blessed. Hopefully, this blog will be my way to sow a few more pennies into the path for others to find and take delight in.
